"Pairing swirling disco beats with raw, diaristic lyricism, the professionally trained ballerina turned chanteuse has created a song that is euphoric and emotional all at once."
2023 is kicking off with some bangers, including the dark-pop anthem “X”, the latest single from New York-based multidisciplinary artist Alexis Lucena, also known as LEXXE.
Pairing swirling disco beats with raw, diaristic lyricism, the professionally trained ballerina-turned-chanteuse has created a song that is euphoric and emotional all at once. A heartwarming tale of love and loss. “X” holds a very special meaning, as an ode to her father, Xavier (X), who passed away 20 years ago. The non-traditional release date of the track on Sunday, January 29th was her late father's birthday.
“A few years ago I was performing and could absolutely swear I saw my father sitting front row,” LEXXE says. “I love to write about the supernatural and the things we don’t understand, so while I acknowledge that seeing him could’ve been something my mind made up, it doesn’t make it any less poignant.”
With artistic authenticity oozing out of everything she does, the “Meet Me In The Shadows” singer is a breath of fresh air with a raw story to tell and refreshing music to share. Her intoxicating sound has captured the attention of tastemakers like Billboard, Audiofemme, and EARMILK.
LEXXE’s original background only adds to her charm as a singer and songwriter. Originally hailing from Long Island and now based in Queens, LEXXE trained at the esteemed Seiskaya Ballet Academy and received her BFA from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance before she dropped her pointe shoes to pursue her love of music. She also performs with the neo-burlesque troupe COMPANY XIV where she is able to combine her love of dance, music, and stage performance.
In “X”, LEXXE shares personal thoughts on grieving her father, contrasting deeply with the high pop energy of the track. “The song is composed of different lines about me questioning life and death, talking about real-life events (the show where I thought I saw him, his friends seeing me in random bars and crying because I look like him, the last time I saw him) and it's really a question of do we ever really die?”
“X” is the perfect pop track, combining catharsis with pure adrenaline. We’re definitely adding it to our winter playlist, and we can’t wait for the album.
